OUR COMMUNITY

Our artisan groups are located in the South of Peru, a región the highest percentage of extreme poverty in Peru and the highest birth rate, commonly called “DeepPeru” as most of it’s towns has little to no communication to the known outside world.

Besides numerous reasons that range from lack of infrastructure to a very scarce healthcare system, the extreme in equality between men and women in this area contributes to it’s extreme lack of resources.

Our artisan groups are located in this area, more specifically in the highlands of Puno above 4000 msnm in the towns of Ajoyani, Antauta and Queracucho. It’s main income source being cattle breeding and farming of several dry beans. These activities that are mainly developed by the men of the area, leaving women only to perform childcare and house chores.

Is because of this that with the help of a non profit organizations, women in the area decided to join as a collective and start a horizontal work chain, where everybody had a saying and an opinion in the daily tasks assigned. Hierarichal structures being tosed on the side, these women gather in groups and decide the tasks of everyone, each one of them excelling in one or two techniques, either handknitting of the handspinning of the yarn.

These associations have no leader as they believe in companionship and equality for all their members, each one of them having a different talent and developing each one of their trades in a happy and thankful way.

Kama Textiles is a partner of these associations as Our main drivers being the reduction of poverty and the fight for gender inequality.
